New Defender's Study Bible Notes

72:16 handful of corn. This is a metaphor for the small remnant of faithful Israel which will survive into the kingdom age and soon become the leading nation in the world, flourishing “like grass of the earth” (Isaiah 62:1-12; Zechariah 14:16-17; etc.).

76:2 Salem. This is the only place in the Old Testament where the name of “Jerusalem” (“the City of Peace”) is abbreviated to “Salem” (or simply “Peace”). Since this psalm is looking forward to the millennium, when God “shall speak peace” (Zechariah 9:10) to all nations, and “out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem” (Isaiah 2:3), the city may then be known simply as Salem. It is true that Melchizedek was called “the king of Salem” in the days of Abraham (Genesis 14:18), but this was probably a theophany, not referring to an earthly city at all, but to the heavenly city (see note on Hebrews 7:2, etc.).

102:13 the time to favour her. When Messiah came to Zion, it was indeed the time anticipated by the prophets for God to favor her. When Zion rejected Messiah, however, a time of severe judgment ensued, when her most beautiful “stones” (Psalm 102:14) would be “thrown down” (Matthew 24:2). However, there is also a future time set by God when He will yet “choose Jerusalem again” (Zechariah 2:12).

102:18 shall be created. The people mentioned are the redeemed nation of Israel (note Psalm 102:16). The verb “create” always has God as the subject, either implicit or explicit, for only He can create. The instantaneous rebirth of the nation of God when they recognize their returning Messiah (Zechariah 12:10; Romans 11:26) will be altogether miraculous.

147:2 build up Jerusalem. Redeemed Israel will offer national praises to Christ, as He fulfills the ancient promises to the nation (Romans 11:26; Zechariah 12:8-10; 13:1; and 14:9).

15:3 eyes of the LORD. See II Chronicles 16:9; Zechariah 4:10.

4:15 living waters. This is the first of eight references in the Bible to “living waters,” four in the Old Testament, four in the New (Jeremiah 2:13; 17:13; Zechariah 14:8; John 4:10,11; 7:38; Revelation 7:17).

2:2 the mountain. In such prophecies, mountains are symbolic of kingdoms. In the coming kingdom age, the Lord will be acknowledged as king over all the earth (Isaiah 9:6-7), with His throne at Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:3). See also Zechariah 14:9.

4:2 the branch. “The branch” is a prophetic name for the coming Messiah (see also Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15; and Zechariah 3:8; 6:12). The reason for the use of this term is more clearly seen in Isaiah 11:1, where a “branch” is seen growing out of an apparently dead tree stump.

11:11 Shinar. Shinar was the location of Babylon (Genesis 10:10). That Jews will be living in Babylon in the last days is one indication that Babylon will be rebuilt in that period (see notes on Zechariah 5:11; Revelation 17:5).
